“Always look ahead and above yourself. Always try to improve yourself. Always strive to elevate your craft.”- Jiro Ono
Name: Kacey Devlin
Occupation: Fashion Designer / Owner at KACEY / DEVLIN
Hometown: North Sydney
Currently residing: North Sydney
Blindfolded and asked to get dressed; backs to fronts, arms through legs, pants as jackets, layered, wrapped, knotted and slung; KACEY/DEVLIN aims to question the fallacies and fictions that clothing has adapted over time, through ‘the undone’.
KACEY/DEVLIN looks to the exposed body as the starting point. Inspired by the unconscious decisions we make, each collection begins with a short film, where wearers engage directly with unfamiliar garments. It is these gestures and movements that inform KACEY/DEVLIN pattern cutting and construction decisions.
Although conceptual, KACEY/DEVLIN is firmly grounded in wearability and quality construction. Combining locally sourced sustainable fibres with luxury silk and wool blends, textured knits and leathers, KACEY/DEVLIN garments visually and conceptually converse with one another, allowing for ongoing curiosity and interaction. KACEY/DEVLIN opens a space where we are no longer passive consumers, but rather active co-creators.
When I was a child I wanted to be… A School Principle
The studies I took to get where I am… Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Textiles at the University of Technology Sydney
I’m inspired by… Those around me. People move and interact in the most curious ways. Its human movement and interaction that lay the foundation to the labels design philosophy and handwriting. With our actions we speak out the most interesting stories… watch and you will hear.
People I admire… My parents. They are the most ingenious, inspiring and compassionate duo I have ever met.
The tools I can’t live without are… a 0.4 Black Artline Pen and the iPhone 5 Charger
The obstacles that have come my way… My own self doubt. Working for yourself and starting your own business is daunting and overwhelming. You have to know when to take risks but also when to be conservative with the decisions you are making. Things worth trying for are never easy. It is about staying focused and seeing the opportunities in every situation.
My favourite place to travel is… I love going places, but nothing compares to coming home.
I would like to travel… to Barbados
The highlights over the past 12 months have been… It has to be launching the label with the first mainline collection and previewing the range to VOGUE Italia Editor, Franca Sozzani. The label has been a long time in planing and I have been so pumped to share the realisation with those who have supported me endlessly to get to this point. It has been 12 months of many first and I am extremely grateful for everything that has unfolded.
Advice I have to share for those who want to get into this profession… The dream is free and the hustle is sold separately. Every day is a rewarding challenge but know why you started and be sure to know what you want to contribute. Make a plan, write it down and work at it every single day.
The latest project I’m working on… In the final stages of designing next winter.
