There is a genius in every mistake.
Name: Corbin Harris
Occupation: Pro-skate boarder, media host and producer
Hometown: Sydney, Australia
Currently location: Los Angeles, California
When Corbin was 4 years old he stole his brothers Powell Peralta Lance Mountain board and took off down the street. That was his first experience with a skateboard. A decade later, his next encounter was with the newly built Vert X skatepark in Taren Point. “It was one of the coolest things I’d ever seen” and at that point Corbin was surfing a lot so the progression from one board to another was a no brainer. He then tossed in his footy jersey and boots for a new found love and soon to be flourishing career. It only took Corbin 2 years before he was Pro.
As a teen, he was touring the country with Big Day Out and Vans Warped Tour alongside bands like Rage Against the Machine and NOFX. A time when bands where REAL bands!
By 18, his big break into TV was via a cold call to FOX to secure a job of TV host and cover skateboarding. The timing was just right. He also went to build long, prosperous relationships with Red Bull and X-Games.
These days he has a new production company working on several different projects and he recently collaborated with Bondi Westfield to co-write and co-direct the commercial in which he is skating though the shopping centre at night. Bad ass!
Corbin moved to downtown LA a few years ago and has found his creative environment and tribe to keep growing what he has already started here in Australia. AR spent time with Corbin days before Bowl-A-Rama down at Bondi skatepark…
When I was a child I wanted to be… So many different things!! I loved Brett Whitely as much as I loved David Campese
The studies I took to get where I am…I’ve done quite a few things. I’ve studied Real Estate, Business, Acting…
I’m inspired by…I’m lucky to have the chance to meet so many amazing people on my travels around the world. What inspires me most is someone achieving excellence as a direct result of hard work. It doesn’t matter what it is, but someone who succeeds through applying themselves is a real inspiration.
A person I admire…I couldn’t narrow it down to just one – Kevin Spacey, John Olsen, Tony Hawk, Dave Grohl my mum Lee are a few…. Really anyone doing cool stuff!
The tools I can’t live without… Obviously my skateboard, but probably my iPhone and my mac book.
I’m most creative when I’m… Skating. I know it might sound weird to some but I just focus and the best ideas come to me when I’m skating!
I’m currently listening too…Mark Ronson’s new album, Modest Mouse, Two Chainz.
The obstacles that have come my way… There have been plenty of obstacles but they are what make you appreciate the good things. Skating can sometimes bring with it some negative connotations, but I think I’ve proven that hard work and determination can mean the sky is the limit!
My favourite place in the world… Cronulla in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire. I grew up there and am back home every Christmas. There really just is no place like home. Especially in summer, just surfing and skating and going for long breakfasts and catching up with friends is my ultimate. If I had to choose another city it would have to be NYC – everything I love is within 14 blocks.
I would like to travel…I am pretty lucky in that my job takes me to some amazing places – I’ve pretty much been travelling since I was 16 – but I’m heading back to Tokyo later in the year with Red Bull and I’m really looking forward to exploring some cool areas over there. It’s a pretty incredible place! Also on my list is Croatia in the summer.
My travel essentials are… Good music, a good book (I’m currently reading The Alchemist again), and Milk & Co Scrub & Cleanse Wipes – they are the best especially on long haul flights. I also make sure I have current season House of Cards and/or Suits for long trips.
The highlights over the past 12 months have been…Being asked to host the Tony Hawk Foundation for the third time by the man himself with Ironman director John Favreauand working on the Red Bull Signature Series for NBC.
The latest project I’m working on…I’ve got a couple of exciting plans in the works actually! Both in LA and Australia.. Watch this space!
Advice I have to share for those who want to get into this profession… Don’t give up but always know where you want to be in 5 years time and keep that in the back of your mind all the time. It’s easy to lose track and get caught up but if you remain focused and honest with yourself, doing things for the right reason, you can do anything you put your mind to!
