Photographs bear witness to a human choice being exercised in a given situation. A photograph is a result of the photographer’s decision that it is worth recording that this particular event or this particular object has been seen. If everything that existed were continually being photographed, every photograph would become meaningless. – John Berger
Name: Cloudy Rhodes
Occupation: Photographer / Surfer
Hometown: Palm Beach
Currently residing: Clovelly, Sydney.
At only 20 years of age, photographer Cloudy Rhodes is one wise woman with many talents and stories to share. A photographer, surfer, skater and creative human being with a spiritual sensibility. Both parents, whom moved from South Africa to Australia are painters and her brother is a film maker. Creativity runs in the family and so too does their love for the ocean. You get the sense she is a worldly person and she is, traveling frequently between Bali, Byron Bay and Bondi and recently moved into her new home of Clovelly with her brother longing for some quiet time to focus on her arts. This Palm Beach girl is one to watch with her photos already showcasing in Monster Children and Desillusion. Take a peak into her world…
When I was a child I wanted to be… I just always said ‘I want to be an artist’.
The studies I took to get where I am… I go to a lot of art shows and read a lot of theory on photography and art. I spent a short time at the National Art School and have assisted photographer Hugh Stewart.
I’m inspired by… Smart people.
My influences are… I like images that tell stories so I take a lot of my influence from film.
People I admire… David Lynch, Juergen Teller, Cass Bird, Steven Fry.
I’m currently listening to… Patti Smith reading ‘Just Kids’ at the moment.
The tools I can’t live without are… 18 – 55 F2.8 Nikon Lens, surfboard, backwards cap.
The obstacles that have come my way… I haven’t really encountered any massive obstacles in my life. I’ve always just gone for what I have wanted and worked hard for it and luckily so far it has worked out.
My favourite place place to travel is… Africa. It will always feel like home.
I would like to travel… Europe in summer
The highlights over the past 12 months have been… It’s always cool to know your images are being seen by others so getting an article in my favourite magazine Monster Children and getting the cover of Desillusion would have to be up there.
Advice I have to share for those who want to get into this profession…The advice I have always tried to follow is to stay true to what I believe and like rather than trying to do what I think others would like.
The latest project I’m working on… Playing with shooting video in a stills style to try and create extended versions of my photographs.
